Selfish [Chapter 3]

Everybody understood that this wasn’t a coincidence, something was wrong. Two days later Vusi decided to go to a traditional doctor in hopes of finding answers about the tragic deaths of his father and two wives. Jabulani told him to visit a traditional doctor close to where they lived. Jabulani knew the traditional doctor from their neighbourhood would not tell Vusi the truth as Jabulani took the poison from him. The traditional doctor told Vusi the death was caused by his late mother as she died upset about what Sanele did to Nonhlanhla.

Jabulani had one task left to do to get everything he wanted at a cost of his younger brother’s happiness. Khethelo had stopped working but he had some money saved and Jabulani knew about this money. The deaths left Khethelo broken and helpless. Jabulani took advantage of Khethelo’s weakness. He made him change his will.

Khethelo did not realise that after his death, all his belongings will be given to his uncle Jabulani. Two months after the burial of his father and his younger brother’s wives, Jabulani went back to the traditional doctor, right before Khethelo went back to Umlazi, to get another poison. The traditional doctor didn’t give Jabulani another poison, but promised him something much better. A few days after Khethelo had left, they received shocking news that Khethelo had died after he was struck by lightning.

They buried him. Vusi’s dreams were shattered. One son had disgraced him and the other died without giving him an heir and left him without any money. But it became clear to him that his older brother was involved somehow in his son’s death after Khethelo’s will stated that Jabulani will be his beneficiary. But he was not in the position to confront his older brother. Jabulani had money, respect, but no son or normal grandson, as Nonhlanhla had given birth to an autistic child.

A few months later, after his success in taking all his younger brother’s money, respect, and family, Jabulani started seeing ghosts. He couldn’t sleep at night and alcohol became a pill to get him through the night. It went on until he even saw them during daylight. All the ghosts of the ones he killed followed him around. Everywhere he went he saw them. Everyone was enjoying freedom but he never had freedom, the ghosts were hunting him day and night.

The world had turned against him, it became brutal and heartless just like he was. People didn’t want to associate them elves with him. He was known as an insane man paying for all his sins. He committed suicide. He left a note confessing all his crimes. Vusi forgave both his brother and niece, who was forced by her father to kill MaKhawula and sleep with Sanele. Vusi also searched for his son and luckily found him. Sanele forgave his father and they went back home. Nonhlanhla married Njabulo Hlophe, Sanele’s childhood friend.

This was a touching story, but sounded so much like a fairy-tale. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but it was kept stacked on my mind. I’m not sure why grandmother told me this story, or whether it was true. But it made me realise that I shouldn’t want something that was not meant to be mine. In life we should appreciates the little things God gave us.
